Sunsets Visit to Waipapa Marae with Room 5

Sunset at Waipapa Marae
On the 13th and 14th of November we went to Waipapa Marae in Kawhia for an overnight stay. A marae is a Maori meeting place for people from that area.
Some of the activities that we did while we were there were fishing off the Kawhia wharf, digging holes at the hot water beach, historical walk to where the Tainui Waka is buried, and playing lots of cricket! In the evening we played spotlight with the adults. It was so much fun!
On the Marae everyone has a specific job to do. These include setting up and cleaning up the dining hall, cooking, dishes, food preparation and setting up the bedding in the wharenui (sleeping house).
At the Marae there are loads of beautiful carvings. Each carving represents a different story or group of people. Everyone sleeps in one giant room. Too bad if there is a loud snorer! Make sure you wear ear plugs if you can’t handle listening to snoring.
Waipapa Marae is located next to a beautiful harbour. It was an amazing view. If you ever come and visit us we will take you there! Sunset had an amazing experience learning all about Maori culture. Maori culture has some similarities to Hawaiian culture (we think).

  12. Hi! How was Kawhia? Was it fun? How do you play cricket? I've never heard of it, nor spotlight. How do you play spotlight? I'll bet it was really fun. I hope the game cricket does not really involve crickets, right? Did you o anything else? Was it fun? Were there any other kids? Or were you all alone being a kid? Was playing with the adults kind of embarrassing? If I were the only kid and there were only other adults, I would feel kind of weird.
